Like most of the tribes in Nigeria, multiple births were considered evil or abnormal in Yoruba land, as those children were used to be eliminated.
Isokun, a small town now in the suburb area of the present Oyo town was assumed to be the source of the first known Ibeji [twins] in Nigeria at least among the Yoruba.
This is because twin babies were unusual and tiny at birth. They were not considered normal birth, but were seen as monkeys, hence they were called Edun [a local word for apes or monkeys].
Twin babies are praised as Ejire ara Isokun ( the strange two births from Isokun)
The first to come out of the twin at birth is called Taiwo, Taye, Taiyelolu or Tai depending on which ever way it is comfortable with the parent.
The first is not the elder by the doctrines and the belief of the Yoruba, the second twin baby called Kehinde is referred to in Yoruba land as ‘A kehinde gba Egbon’, meaning, [the last is actually the senior of the two].

The Yoruba believe that Kehinde must have sent Taiwo to come out first to see if the world is good for the two of them.
Findings revealed that the twin babies represent passages and gateways to new realities and even
alternate realms.
Yoruba people believe that twins are semi-divine and possess special powers.
However, there was pomp and pageantry last Sunday at the ancient palace in Oyo town, when the monarch, His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba [Dr.] Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi 111, celebrated his baby triplets.

Two of the monarch’s wives [Ayaba] gave birth to the quadruplet at different times.
While Ayaba Memunat Adeyemi Omo 1 was the first to give birth to female twins, Ayaba Badirat delivered her own male twins barely nine days after.
Traditionally, after child delivery in the palace, Islamic clerics will be invited to give names to the child eight days after birth. Thereafter, a day will be chosen for the celebration of the child.
If the child is the first to be delivered by an Ayaba, some traditional rites will first be performed before the naming, after which such a child will be celebrated at a chosen date.
The colourful event was attended by traditional rulers from Lagos, Osun and Oyo States, members of the Oyo Traditional Council [Oyo Mesi], son of the Alaafin and a member of the House of Representatives representing Oyo Federal Constituency [Afijio, Atiba, Oyo-West and Oyo-East], Senator, representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Alhaja Monsurat Sunmonu, and other invited guests.
Popular Fuji star, Alhaji Wasiu Alabi, a k a Pasuma, and his band entertained guests with hilarious music.
