“Ember” periods are not evil…FRSC boss…

Oluyole Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Ibadan, Oyo State, Mrs  Titilayo Temitope Olayiwola, has attributed attitudinal problems of drivers in the months of  September to December as the major cause of accident and not that those months were specially designed for fatal accidents and urged road users to be very careful and not be in a haste to make money in order to safeguard their lives and other innocent road users.

Speaking to Daily sun recently, Mrs Olayiwola whose unit covers the Iwo road interchange to Onigaari in Ogun state of the Lagos /Ibadan express way that though the rate of accident that occurred on her own axis of the expressway has reduced drastically compared to what happened last year due to intensive awareness programs embarked upon by her administration immediately she resumed duty in February. She further revealed that officer within are jurisdiction are really working hand in hand with the construction companies  rehabilitating the expressway in making sure that the construction works going on is more of a blessing than a curse to road users which has led to patching of most the roads yet to be fully rehabilitated..

“It is generally believed that the “ember” months are evil in this part of the globe, people tends to forget that there are  three major causes of accident ,the first one is human error, mechanical error and the environment and attitude of road users has a major roles to play in all these three aspects. We noticed that attitudes of drivers towards the “ember” months is to make money as quick as possible, they want to make as many trips to and from Lagos as possible thereby becoming so hasty, some they don’t evil care about their physical, psychological and mental state conditions . The state of their vehicles, they don’t check properly for any mechanical error before embarking on a journey and sometime they just want to manage the condition of the vehicle to the next destination in order to maximize gain. Many at times the attitudes of the driver towards the environment is wrong and as you can see the construction work is ongoing and the environment has changed, that is why we embarked on various awareness programmes in motor parks, school and other public place to educate drivers on the need to be careful at this particular periods.

The vehicular movements at these periods is high so is the category of vehicle are highly articulated that is why we appeal to the conscience of the drivers first before enforcing any law or arrest. She concluded.
